Olive View Medical Center Emergency Generator Plant Noise Control

UCLA

Three new 2000KW emergency generators were to be installed to serve the UCLA Medical Center. These would be located, along with a load bank and other related equipment, in a new equipment yard adjacent to the medical facility, and approximately 1,400ft from the nearest residential development.

MCH calculated the expected noise levels at various directions and distances, and in turn developed a set of recommendations for generator housings and mufflers, as well as appropriate security wall materials and heights, in order to satisfy noise codes as well as more stringent goals for neighbor satisfaction.

As predicted, the generator yard noise levels at the residential property lines were measured to be no louder than noise from distant traffic on the 210 Freeway, and our analysis also clearly predicted satisfaction at night. We remain unaware of any complaints regarding generator equipment noise.
