Granoff Music Center

Tufts University School of Arts and Sciences

The Granoff Music Center opened to an extremely enthusiastic faculty and student body, as the new home of the entire Music Department at Tufts University. The building includes classrooms (several with box-in-box isolation), faculty offices, practice rooms, multi-media lab, teaching studios, music library, world-music rehearsal & performance venue, skylit atrium which can host performances and receptions, and two recital halls.

The centerpiece is the 300-seat Distler Performance Hall, designed for lush and enveloping reverberation for natural unamplified music, without any interruption from extraneous or audible background noise. It is accalimed for both performance and recording. The sound and AV systems were tailored specifically for the usages and acoustics of each space, but with maximum interconnectivity; the overall design assures maximum usability, cost-effectiveness, and potential for incorporating future technologies.

Acoustical consulting provided as a Cavanaugh Tocci Assoc., Sudbury, MA project, K. Anthony Hoover, FASA Principal Consultant.
