Robert Frost Auditorium Grand Opening

The grand opening of the newly renovated, historic Robert Frost Auditorium in Culver City, CA was last weekend - September 29, 2018. Architects Craig Hodgetts and Ming Fung of Hodgetts+Fung provided a full renovation of the auditorium along with ancillary spaces such as a rehearsal room, black box theater, scene shop, and practice rooms.

Designed by Flewelling and Moody, the auditorium opened in 1964 featuring a massive leaf-like roof draped over the stage. The visually striking 4" thick, concrete roof spans 210' and remarkably, survived the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. It remains local icon and remarkable example of Mid-Century Modern architecture in the Los Angeles area.

The new interior features a permanent yet flexible-use catwalk as well as a doubled-in-height black box theater. The auditorium seats 1,300 and is home to the Culver City High School's theater troupe.

MCH was responsible for guiding HVAC design (previously there was only ventilation), sound isolation, and selection of period-appropriate finish materials.
