Hydrogen Station

Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

Located in the Rancho Palos Verdes community, this drive-up station will begin to provide hydrogen fuel in 2020. Due to the noisy on-site hydrogen compressors and related facility equipment, a sound study was required to ensure that the new facility would satisfy the Rancho Palos Verdes Noise Ordinance.

MCH was engaged to predict expected noise levels through a vegetated hillside into a residential neighborhood due to the hydrogen equipment. This exercise included measurements of an existing Hydrogen station with similar equipment, while noting effects of directionality, individual sound sources within the skid enclosure, and effects of various noise-reducing accoutrements.

After measuring and analyzing equipment noise, measurements were taken at the future location to quantify existing ambient noise levels at and around the future location. With the collected data, MCH assisted in the design of necessary structures and noise control procedures to successfully satisfy the noise ordinance.
