Dreyfus Chemistry Lab Renovation

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Cambridge, MA

The Dreyfus Chemistry Laboratory covers 130,000 sq. ft. at the heart of the MIT campus, housing primary research in organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physical chemistry. Major design challenges included increasing fume-hood capacity, increasing safety, providing full air-conditioning, and daylighting the labs. All renovations were within extremely tight floor-to-floor dimensions, and involved the replacement of all mechanical & electrical systems, fume hoods, casework, and finishes.

Labs are organized into six-person open bays, linking support areas and labs. Glazed interior walls provide daylight to recessed interior spaces.  The building operated throughout three years of construction.

Awards:

  • R&D Magazine - 2004 Renovated Lab of the Year

  • Associated General Contractors - 2004 Aon Build America Merit Award

  • The Boston Society of Architects/SCUP - 2005 Citation for Higher Educational Facilities Design.
